How to read the table

The lunar day is not the calendar date: in the Tibetan calendar some days are doubled and some are skipped, which is why a month can start on the 18th lunar day and hold two “8th days”. The element and animal follow the 60-day cycle and colour what the day is good for — Wood days favour study and beginnings, Water days travel and healing, Earth days contracts and property, Fire days medicine, Metal days decisive completion. The haircut column follows the lunar-day tradition: the 8th day for longevity, the 10th for joy, the 15th for luck, while the 1st and 12th are avoided. Because the Tibetan lunar day (tithi) is tied to the Moon’s motion, not to midnight: in a year about seven lunar days are doubled and thirteen are skipped, so the count is read from the Phugpa almanac rather than computed by simple counting.
